Checkups & Cleanings

Regular dental checkups are the foundation of your child's oral health. At Smiles 4 Kids, every checkup is designed to be thorough yet gentle, using age-appropriate tools and techniques that put kids at ease.

During a cleaning, our hygienists carefully remove plaque and tartar buildup, polish teeth, and check for early signs of decay or developmental issues. Dr. Liz then performs a complete examination of your child's teeth, gums, bite, and jaw development.

What to Expect

  • Gentle cleaning with kid-sized instruments
  • Full exam of teeth, gums, and bite alignment
  • Digital X-rays as needed (low radiation)
  • Personalized oral hygiene tips for home care

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is nature's cavity fighter. It strengthens tooth enamel and helps repair early stages of tooth decay before they become visible. At Smiles 4 Kids, we use professional-strength fluoride that provides far more protection than toothpaste alone.

The treatment is quick, painless, and even comes in kid-friendly flavors. We recommend fluoride treatments at every six-month checkup, especially during the cavity-prone years when permanent teeth are still developing.

What to Expect

  • Quick, painless application (under 5 minutes)
  • Choice of fun flavors kids love
  • Protection that lasts for months
  • Recommended every 6 months for most children

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars), where most childhood cavities occur. These grooves are difficult for toothbrush bristles to reach, making them especially vulnerable to decay.

Sealants act as a barrier, sealing out food particles and bacteria. The application is quick, painless, and doesn't require any drilling. Once applied, sealants can protect teeth for up to 10 years with proper care.

What to Expect

  • Completely painless — no shots or drilling
  • Applied in minutes per tooth
  • Long-lasting protection (5-10 years)
  • Most effective when applied soon after molars come in

Orthodontic Assessment

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, Dr. Liz can identify potential issues with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.

Early detection doesn't always mean early treatment. Sometimes it means monitoring growth and timing treatment for when it will be most effective. Other times, early intervention can prevent more complex issues — and more expensive treatment — down the road.

What to Expect

  • Evaluation of bite alignment and jaw development
  • Assessment of spacing, crowding, or crossbite
  • Clear explanation of any concerns found
  • Referral to a trusted orthodontist if treatment is needed

Behavior Management

It's completely normal for children to feel nervous about the dentist. Dr. Liz and her team are specially trained in pediatric behavior management techniques that help anxious children feel safe, understood, and in control.

Our primary approach is "tell-show-do" — we explain what we're going to do in kid-friendly language, show them the tools, and then proceed gently. We use positive reinforcement, distraction techniques, and never rush. Every child gets to go at their own pace.

What to Expect

  • Patient, pressure-free environment
  • Tell-show-do technique for every procedure
  • Positive reinforcement and praise throughout
  • Parents welcome in the treatment room

Emergency Care

Dental emergencies don't wait for business hours, and neither do we. If your child experiences a toothache, knocked-out tooth, chipped or broken tooth, or any other dental emergency, call us right away. We make every effort to see emergency patients the same day.

While you're on your way, stay calm — your child takes cues from you. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, place it in milk and bring it with you. For a toothache, rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek.

What to Expect

  • Same-day emergency appointments when possible
  • Phone guidance while you're on your way
  • Gentle treatment focused on pain relief first
  • Follow-up care plan to ensure proper healing
